The powers that be are discussing a possible expansion of theNCAAtournament. Now as we all know when you have a good thing going you don’t throw a monkey wrench into the works, That’s what you would be doing to a system that is in no need of repair.      Sure all systems have their flaws and you will always have that couple of teams that will complain about not getting selected around the bubble teams. To those teams all i can say is play better get more wins and take that equation out of the picture.  Let’s look at another sport say football, now this is a system that is broken entirely. the BCS is such acrock of *****,  well you know what i’m saying. First of all you have to be a BCS school or your odds of playing in the championship game are worse than getting hit bylightning or winning the lotto.. Unfortunately, they’re going to have to work some things out to make other teams think they want him.How do they do this?Start trading now Like, in the next few days. What Thompson does often goes forgotten because of thelowly Kings status. The 27-year-old Spanish forward joins the Breakers after playing for FFC Frankfurt in Germany?s Frauen-Bundesliga league, where she has notched six goals this season. If he went in saying he never wanted to play for Ernie Grunfeld again, I’d have a harder time accepting his thought process from a fans standpoint. That being said, I have done my fair share of supporting Gilbert throughout his tenure here in Washington Some things were easy to defend, others not so much. His intentions could be that he didn’t want to see HBK retire and should still be out there. The condition could be that HBK would only retire if he lost by pinfall or submission. A number of things can be achieved from this.1 It ensures that the streak remains alive.

While forfeiting all hope of a .500 record in 2010, Pirates GM Neal Huntington has a bevvy of young talent working its way through the organization. But from a basketball standpoint, the assertion is ludicrous. Living in Missouri, I know that there are an unbelieveable amount of Sooner fans here. I was naturally skeptical when I drove to the cavernous Los Angeles Coliseum to watch the L.A. “Oregon is one of the most beautiful, livable places on the planet, and commitment to being good environmental stewards is part of what defines our region. He rarely shows up on stat sheets but that’s hard to accomplish when two or three opponents are always giving him their full, undivided attention. But coaches and scouts know the proper way to rank somebody like Cody is by the production of the linebackers behind him. The year before the Rajasthan Royals beat the Chennai Super Kings led by MS Dhoni to win the inaugural tournament.

They’ve been replaced by cheaper imitations and wannabes to fit a budget and storyline. Ignatius selected Michigan over Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Toledo. I am not suggesting that attending any of those other schools I listed up above would have been bad choices or schools for Courtney Avery, Jake Ryan, or anyone else that Michigan has recruited from Ohio high schools. There were few defensive tackles in the league better than the 6′6″, 250-pound Chambers. Even though Longoria is a power hitter, he is not elite power hitter the way he is being promoted.. Tomas Vokoun is playing very well and, although the team in front of him has floundered, Vokoun has proven himself to be one of the best goalies in the NHL.

I don’t think Al Davis cares what the fans think and takes Anthony Davis. Bud Light House of BeerBud Light has come out with another classic commercial. It took experience for Palmer, and the Trojans in general, to get good (like really really winning National Titles good). After him? An experienced young chap by the name of Matt Leinart (another National Championship, and a shoe-string tackle away from a third). Then? John David Booty (Pac-10 championship followed by Pac-10 championship). We already spoke about Sanchez, but you get the picture. By selecting safety Earl Thomas they will have the ball hawking safety that they thought were getting when they picked up Madieu Williams. It takes unwavering dedication to reach the top in individual sport.

BC Place Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies.. He played for five different coaches (Webster, Bill Arnsparger , John McVay , Ray Perkins , Parcells) and in four home stadiums (Yankee Stadium, the Yale Bowl, Shea Stadium, Giants Stadium). And he was a Giant through and through. Seattle?s first-round pick, eighth overall, in 1995 was one of the Seahawks? most dynamic wide receiver ever and made big plays seemingly every time he caught the ball.Over his five-year career in the Pacific Northwest, Joey Galloway passed 1,000-yard receiving mark three times, including his rookie season when he caught 67 balls for 1,039 yards and seven touchdowns. Williams closed it out in the third set.Azarenka made it to the semifinals in Sydney, where she lost to eventual champion Dementieva, 6-3, 6-1. The whole, love them when they are winning, but hate them when they are losing attitude. But with UK it is not just one here and there. After beginning the 2009 season extremely well (5-0), the Boxers hit a rut at the end of the season and lost three of their last four games. Despite missing the playoffs, Louis-Jean still received a great amount of interest from Division One colleges around the nation.

Their balance is certainly one reason that makes them so tough to beat. Is this a sign of things to come after Auburn landed a class that depending on where you look, was better than Alabama?s in 2010?Maybe it is, maybe it isn?t, but this is a huge start for Auburn and their 2011 class.Region added, “I feel like Auburn is the place that I need to be My family feels at peace about it. Coach (Rich) Rodriguez was a walk-on at West Virginia and has a place in his heart for them.”Dylan is 6″6 and 220 and runs a 4.88 40. The downhill skier is considered almost a lock for gold and, as a bonus, she’s super hot.So click through to see more of this sexy skier. Texas State increased its lead by posting three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and a single run in both the seventh and eighth innings. When it looked as if the Cougars’ fate had been sealed, Houston began to rally in the eighth.

He finished the season by winning six games for the Rock Cats and posting a 5.17 ERA. The mindset of the fans going in was ” This is a tune up” , and it turned into a dissapointment. They have a great quarterback, and a great receiver corps. They have an all-pro offensive line. They have a strong defense, but really lacks explosiveness, intensity, and excitement. So I present three players that could change the post-season fate of the Chargers.Three players that can change the Chargers’ fate in the playoffs.1. Last year Al Davis was willing to put down a ton of money to lock up Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler for extra time and then pulled a rabbit out of his hat, in the form of Richard Seymour. What else does Al Davis have in store for this club? Stay tuned….no one can tell.. Most owners would never even consider re-signing a troubled player like Henry after his troubled past. Not Brown. His loyalty to giving Henry another chance as a member of the Bengals was a move that seemed crazy at first, but turned out to be inspiring heading into the 2009 season. Who in the NBA will get that lucky honor?Wall is just an amazing athlete. Holy IndyCars, Batman! Say hello to our first “revolutionary” design Exposed engine, semi-wingless, smooth flowing lines…

His agent, Brian Overstreet, said Tuesday that Hampton, an unrestricted free agent, is willing to sign a long-term deal with the Steelers even if they tag him, the deadline for doing so is 4 p.m Thursday and prevent him from hitting the open market. Needless to say, he is a thriving member of the Manning family and is equally proud of his two brothers’ success. Peyton Manning will now enter the biggest game of the year for his second time under rookie head coach Jim Caldwell, armed with the strength of his family’s legacy and the indomitable spirit of his older brother.Drew Brees comes in as the ambassador of a city revived, shouldering the burden for inspiration at its very best. A victory for either team will be a well-noted notch in the belt of the NFL’s legacy. Smart, young, good-looking and always has good stuff to share.Jay Bilas: Kind of a poor man’s Kirk Herbstreit I’m not crazy about his commercials, but he is smart. Today’s Auto Club 500 is the second race of the NASCAR Sprint CupSeries season.

He has developed into a great shot-blocker and a ferocious rebounder. to a Southern Section Division 1 Championship in 1999.Leinart’s Senior season did not end as he would have liked, missing out on a third consecutive Division 1 Championship when his Monarch’s fell short in the quarter-finals, but he was named an All-County and an All-State Quarterback while setting school and Orange County passing records for attempts, completions, and touchdowns, all the while being named Gatorade California Athlete of the Year in 2000.But Leinart did not stop in high school, his future NFL prowess was heightened by his performance and production at USC. From the moment that Leinart was named the starter at USC in 2003, he told Pete Carroll, “You are never going to regret this!” And sure enough, no one regretted naming Leinart the starting quarterback, because as history shows, the Trojans ran off an Associated Press National Championship in his debut season as the USC starter. Then in 2004, the Trojans went “wire-to-wire”, having started the season ranked No. The former Phillie and Met knows the NL East as well as anyone; I look for him to have success in Atlanta. Brian Sabean and co. They brought a new guy in named Sheamus, look how he turned out WWE forced him into the title picture and screwed up. Losing one of the nation’s best talents to the NBA draft last year in Blake Griffin didn’t help matters However, Oklahoma has plenty of talent. He encourages you to support their movement of “Yes, I Can” by visiting their Web site at Before we get carried away though, we should remember who we?re talking about here?a really, really average, boring to watch defensive midfielder with merely average qualities. He was no more than a cog in a Dortmund machine that was fortunate to reach the final, and capitalised well on a Juventus side that choked on their big day.Lambert himself spent only one season at Dortmund before returning to play for Celtic, guaranteeing him some silverware with the minimum of effort He?s won trophies with Celtic, Dortmund, and St.

The reasons for said shitness are twofold 1) I’m fooked and 2) I’m wrecked…but seriously 3) THERE’S NOTHING GOING ON IN THE WORLD OF ARSENAL. Ashley ColeSo the “best left back in the world” is out for three months Which is excellent Excellent for everyone really Except for England, Chelsea, and the Tweedy’s All of them are furious The rest of the world are delighted Over the fooking moon.Poor guy might miss the World Cup. Auburn will be able to concentrate fully on execution of the full game plan in 2010 There will be much improved competition in practice.. He’s a 6′5″ 301 pound DT that could play alongside Ellis and give some depth at the position. In the case that he’s gone when our pick comes around, we should look to Terrence Cody out of Alabama. The company had noted that PPV was always something they were looking at and they finally found the right fight card to experiment with. Seeing as he is a bit of a journeyman, I believe that Sanford would take fewer dollars for more term and the stability that that offers. The other option would be to forsake Sanford and acquire a veteran goaltender in the Halak trade. The second half of conference play should be intense?to say the least. Allie always provided the comic relief to alleviate Rocky?s frustrations with Weill or anything else that bothered his friend and took his focus off the fight game.

Dale Earnhardt Jr who was 2ndin the Daytona 500 last week is 27th and Jeff Gordon who won the first race at Auto Club in 1997 is 28th.. After his stunning display in the third round, he clearly earned the victory.” Dr. The drop-off is extreme. The current system is causing 60 percent of players to quit hockey before the PeeWee level and 20 percent of players to hang them up after only one year in the sport, according to USA Hockey.Herb’s goal was to broaden that pyramid, keeping players of all ages and skill levels engaged and excited to play the game of hockey just like he did. HBF ProgramsRink Rats: In its second year of existence, the Rink Rat program has given hundreds of inner-city children the opportunity to play and learn the game in a safe, fun environment at no cost. The Colts were left as the lone undefeated team with two games left. Also, problems arose in Minnesota between Brad Childress and Brett Favre when Childress attempted to bench Favre.Week 16 brought controversy to benching starters with a playoff spot wrapped up, as the undefeated Colts played Curtis Painter among other backups and were beat by the Jets.

Quite the change from the typical “we’re a running team first,” mentality the Bears have become known by. Since his days in St. It rises in a bullish economy, but does not reset itself in bearish times. The Broncos could easily see their two best players depart this offseason. There is about a month until Spring Training officially begins in Scottstdale, Ariz. We will miss him both as a person and as a player.”Source: PhiladelphiaEagles Attached Thumbnails  This article is also featured on GridironFans .

It makes us appreciate it more because we had to work that much harder, knowing [our bench] was so short.? ?It?s different [without Henderson-Niles],? admitted second-year Tiger Roburt Sallie ?I?ve been knowing Pierre for two years [Pierre and I] have a real tight bond. “Too Easy” was vital, but not solely relied upon.Goran Suton, Travis Walton, and Durrell Summers all came up big when Tom Izzo called on them last March?what about this year?Suton and Walton are gone, but Summers is still a part of the Izzo clan (right?).Widely considered one of the conference’s premier athletes, Summers has done a dead-on Houdini impression and disappeared into thin air.It was hardly “Summer Time” last Tuesday against Purdue, Summers scored only two points and didn’t start the second half.It has been reported that there’s tension between Izzo and Summers, fueling the fire of rumors that he may forgo his senior year at State and jump into the 2010 NBA Draft. The NFL will not hold a news conference next week in Florida in which Mark Murphy, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, was expected to discuss the current state of negotiations with the NFL Players’ Association, Sports Business Daily reported this afternoon. When in reality, these are the guys you could be seeing as the the future of the UFC.Many people don’t realize that most “Fight of the Night” awards go to one of the undercard fights Mostly because these guys have nothing to lose. Billy Wagner is one of the most dominant closers in MLB history, and Moylan, O?Flaherty, and Saito should all be capable of handling the seventh and eighth innings. As long as the lineup can provide clutch hitting, the Braves are poised to make a run deep into the playoffs with their dominant pitching staff that should be able to keep opposing offenses in check every night. If everything falls into place, the Braves could be hoisting the World Series trophy, and sending longtime skipper Bobby Cox out on top of the baseball world, come November..

The Backyard BrawlPitt leads the series 61-38-3The series began in 1895 A rivalry began primarily due to proximity. Paul Janish and his .214 average is currently slotted in as the starter. Winning gold in Vancouver will ultimately be seen as the greatest hockey victory for Canada, surpassing the legendary 1972 Summit Series vs theformer Soviet Union. The pressure is immense for this very young and talented squad, and deservedly so. So, I don’t want to get into it too much, but once it gets out there, and gets put out there, I’ll let everybody know.Alright, sounds good. And if it was true that Pacquiao was on PED, it would not guarantee Pacquiao’s win, but cause Pacquiao to be over confident and aggressive and must play in the wheelhouse of Mayweather’s perfect shoulder roll defense.

Hickson, Big Z’s expiring contract, and a draft pick or two to get Amare’s services for four months, a run at the title, a solid chance to resign him, and most importantly, have the pieces in place to have a perennial championship caliber team that Lebron James would want to stick around Cleveland to play with  The pieces are out there for the taking. Instead of soaking up these last few hours of sacred sleep, I’m awake. You can’t blame the Coyotes for that.Dave Tippett , Don Maloney , and the players have all done their jobs. He’s the highest rated punter, but that’s aseventh or sixth round at best. Miz would then tag in Jack Swagger and Swagger would deliver his gut wrenchpower bomb on Punk. Should NASCAR keep the wing or switch to the spoiler? I am a big fan of the spoiler and have been for years.

Westbrook has only had two 1,000 yard rushing seasons in his five-year career and his injuries last year might have the Eagles looking more towards McCoy. Immediately following that match, the players’ game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.. 15 Gonzaga’s poor shooting kept the game close through the midway point of the first half as the Bulldogs (8-3) connected on just two of their first 10 shots. But they did go down and when that happens, there can be no excuses.”You might not expect to see some of the big teams get relegated, but when it happens, it happens for a reason.”It’s too easy to say you are too good to go down and if you start thinking that, then you are in big trouble.”"From 12th downwards, it’s incredibly close,” said the former Celtic hitman. Michael David Smith of FanHouse is reporting that Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told reporters on Media Day that he will make Colts quarterback Peyton Manning the highest paid player in the NFL.

Although his career numbers are much better than that, it’s easier to expect deteriorating numbers as he reaches the twilight of his career. More perplexing is the acquisition of former Yankee and new DH Nick Johnson. While evaluating Johnson, it’s a question of when not if he’ll spend an extended stint on the DL. The Chiefs have told their fans for years that they “have a plan” but hardly make that statement palpable to the public. Monday we saw Kofi qualify for the EC match but he has lost so much momentum heading into Wrestlemania that it’s hard to think he’ll be in the title hunt. Provided that a bar mitzvah doesn’t prohibit it from occurring, WBA super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman is expected to defend his crown against former WBO welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto on June 5 at Yankee Stadium. “The Yankees want to make a deal, we know we can make a deal, they’re just working through a problem at Yankee Stadium,” promoter Bob Arum told the Associated Press on Tuesday. “But you wouldn’t believe it if I told you.

I have seen him listed as being taken in the sixth round on some draft boards, but I would like to see the Bears go after him in the fourth round, which is where I believe his talent should land him.I know that a lot of people believe the Bears need to go after a safety, but I think the Bears need to address that concern through free agency. Bisping’s game is counter-punching and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch Silva off guard with counter strikes I believe that Silva has definitely lost a step, if not two. Watson,Golden State Warriors Waston had 12 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists for the Warriors He’s also very inconsistent Originally published at LestersLegends .. This is a pretty obvious play on the expression “Loose Cannon” which may not be the most fitting description of Rich Gannon. It is normally given to a person who takes unnecessary risks in order to reach a goal he or she has set. He looks to improve this year by going onto the semis or even the finals.Nikolay Davydenko, who has had an advantage on Federer recently, was very successful at the end of the year tournaments last year.

As you can see, the men involved at the ground level all bring their own unique and impressive gifts to the table. The initial disappointment of missing out on Jennifer Heil’s gold is long gone now that Canada has emerged victorious in three events to go with its two silver medals and two bronze medals. Also, his start possibly gave Sagna not just some rest, but also food for thought that he shouldn’t take his place for granted. For Liverpool, since Torres & Aquilani were unavailable, it really was going to be comfortable for Arsenal. Assuming there is no new CBA, and that’s a pretty safe assumption at this point, Brooks will be a restricted free agent on March 5 and the 49ers could tender him a one-year contract, but this might be a good time to get lock him up to a long-term deal, with a productive full season in 2010, his stock would rise dramatically.Source: Press Democrat This article is also featured on GridironFans .

Livorno, Jonathan Zebina was one among the first to speak of a spark, of a victory necessary to make Juventus restart Vs. Like they say, “the rest is history.”More so than Glavine, it must be hard for Braves fans to see Smoltz in another uniform. “The CVB is such an influential figure in bringing people to the Merrimack Valley,” said Spinners Vice President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. needed to move on as well as Dunleavy the coach. No one can deny, however, that injuries had as much to do with the teams record as anything else. Nick has always believed the fans are thetwelfth player on every play.Saban goes almost out of his way in speeches and post game press conferences to praise the fans.

Yet with just 100 properties, Macdonald lacks scale. Its 50:50 joint venture with Bank of Scotland to buy Heritage Hotels in April propelled it in the right direction, but analysts caution that competition is fierce for similar deals. Macdonald has already been pipped to the post in its quest to buy Posthouse by the mighty Six Continents (formerly Bass).Which leaves Macdonald nursing its predominantly provincial four-star hotel portfolio – which has helped the group to stave off the worst of the current industry malaise – and investing some £60m into the Heritage venture to improve the business mix.The stock, which ticked up 1.5p to 184p, lags its 1999 peak of 240p but solid interim results yesterday should propel it in the right direction. Pre-tax profits for the six months to 4 October were 7 per cent up on last year at £7m on sales of £70.4m. While room yields were down in properties in the South-east, the outlook was stronger. Analysts forecast a full-year profit of £16m which puts the shares on a p/e ratio of 10. Hold for long-term growth prospects.JarvisJarvis has managed to transform itself from a mucky old-style construction group to a sexy support services player and the move has paid off.It now operates in two main areas: rail maintenance and Private Finance Initiative work It has not all been smooth progress. The company was hit by a big short-fall in expected profits in 1999, when a Railtrack contract produced less profit than anticipated and the shares were punished suitably.

Since then, relations with Railtrack have improved considerably. And after the Hatfield train crash, Jarvis won the large East Coast Mainline contract. It is also part of Tubelines consortium that was selected as preferred bidder for one of the massive London Underground PPP contracts.Despite the political controversy, PFI or PPP contracts have found favour in the City. Yesterday Jarvis announced it had won another PFI deal, for a Birmingham health clinic.PFI provides reliable long-stream earnings – many of these contracts run for 30 years.

That’s impressive recession-proof visibility of earnings and double-digit returns on investment.. Ben Verwaayen (pronounced Ver-why-en), the new chief executive at BT Group, appears nothing if not well qualified for the task of dealing with a corporate basket case. He’s already worked for two of them – first at KPN, the Dutch telecoms operator, and more latterly at Lucent Technologies, whose shares are so far below water that Mr Verwaayen will not find giving up his share options to move to BT any great sacrifice. Whether this makes him a natural choice for the quest of turning around BT is not entirely clear, but his appointment certainly signals progress of sorts. Mr Verwaayen seems a worthy, if somewhat dull choice, but then Sir Christopher was never going to opt for someone who might in any way eclipse his own role in the great BT turnaround story, if that is what it is going to be.BT now has a new chairman and a new chief executive and it will shortly have a new finance director too, since the present incumbent, Philip Hampton, has said he wants to leave, the task of restructuring the balance sheet and demerging the mobile interests largely complete.

He wrote a series of articles pubished in the paper was to develop into Richards’s best-known and much-cited work Lessons of the Spanish Revolution (1953).The paper became War Commentary during the Second World War and inevitably Richards found himself and the paper in trouble with the authorities. Along with his wife, Marie Louise Berneri, Philip Sansom and Dr John Hewetson, he was arraigned under the Defence of the Realm Act for conspiring to cause disaffection among members of the armed forces. The paper suggested that liberty removed in the name of freedom during the war was unlikely to be restored after it.The civil liberties implications of the charge were serious and the public reaction was strong Herbert Read, George Orwell, T.S Eliot, E.M. Forster and Osbert Sitwell were all involved in the defence, along with the “usual suspects”, Bertrand Russell, Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett, etc.

Despite the defence committee’s august membership, and despite a police mix-up which confused Herbert Read’s art writing with anarchist propaganda and placed the defendants in a non-existent “Surrealist Party”, the three men were sentenced to a year’s imprisonment.Upon release he resumed editorship of Freedom, a role that was to continue for 30 years, while simultaneously raising money for publication, writing weekly leading articles, editing anthologies and photographing people and places. He also started a venture in organic vegetable growing which became a full-time occupation on his retirement from editing Freedom in 1965. He was without doubt a workaholic and was still producing books into his eighties. In particular there was the now celebrated collection of photographs, George Orwell at Home (and among the Anarchists), published in 1998.He had already suffered a tragedy when Marie Louise Berneri’s child was still-born, and she succumbed to viral pneumonia a year later, in 1949. But he continued to work and write with vigour until the death of his second partner, Peta Hewetson, in 1997. After that he became something of a recluse and the intense enthusiasm in living to a degree diminished.

Even at the end, though, he continued a vigorous correspondence with friends, denouncing Radio 3 for “too much talk” and expressing delight in the music programmes he had enjoyed.Perhaps the best summation is that given by his colleague Philip Sansom, writing in 1986 in Freedom: a hundred years. If Richards had not started Spain andthe World, the whole history of modern British anarchism would have been, not different but non-existent, for that is where it stems from. The movement today with its various branches and many publications has largely grown from the groups inspired by Freedom Press.John Pilgrim. Harry Horsburgh Waugh, wine merchant and writer: born Chilwick, Hertfordshire 9 June 1904; MBE 1994; twice married (one son, one daughter); died London 28 November 2001. He was the man who presided over a new golden age of fine wines for Harvey’s of Bristol which, thanks to his influence, became one of the country’s leading fine wine merchants in the two decades after the Second World War.A man of infectious energy and charm, Waugh did much to take the ?tism and mystique out of wine, laying the foundations for today’s unstuffy approach to wine-drinking. And despite an insatiable appetite for good living, he remained a trim and sprightly figure right to the end of a life spanning all but the first four years of the 20th century.Harry Waugh was born in 1904 at Chilwick, Hertfordshire.

But he recognised the need to nurture an alternative to the Manx, which was expensive to make and nearing the end of its evolution, so he took the 500cc “Dominator 88″ road model and converted it into a racer. In the 1961 Isle of Man TT, won by Mike Hailwood on a very special Manx whose engine cost a rumoured £3,000 to build, the prototype “Domiracer” was ridden to third place by the Australian Tom Phillis. Averaging over 100mph for the 226-mile race, Phillis amazed diehards with the speed and stamina of the modified road machine. The project was dropped when Norton’s parent company Associated Motor Cycles (AMC) called a halt to racing development. Hele applied lessons learnt from the Domiracer to the new Dominator 88SS sports roadster, which was ridden to class victory in the demanding 500 Production Machine marathon at Thruxton airfield by two of the factory’s testers, Fred Swift and Dennis Greenfield. Hele then applied his knowledge to the company’s 650cc sports model and cooperated with the leading dealer Syd Lawton of Southampton to enter the machine in the Thruxton race.

They were rewarded with overall victory three years in a row. The publicity value to Norton was incalculable. In 1962, the closure of Norton’s Birmingham factory and its removal to AMC’s site in Plumstead, south London, was announced. Hele declined the opportunity to move south, preferring to stay in the Midlands, and considered his options. He had been teaching evening classes in technical drawing, but to qualify as a tutor would require him taking a college course in Essex. He responded to an advertisement from the Ford Motor Company, assuming it would be for their Leamington Spa engine plant, but the post was in their Dagenham plant – Essex again. “I did think that the fates were conspiring against me,” he admitted later. The offer to become head of development at Triumph’s factory outside Coventry was the answer to a problem and the beginning of his seminal time in the motorcycle industry. At the Meriden factory he built up a team both loyal and remarkably able, who would work on into the night if a job had to be finished.

Hele’s first project was to cure the wayward habits of the very fast “Bonneville” sports bike, and with minor changes he did the job. After work on the engine was completed, Hele phoned Syd Lawton in Southampton and told him the Bonneville was ready to be raced seriously in production events. “Doug Hele was a good, straight bloke, and if he said a bike was right I believed him,” remembered Lawton. Lawton’s team swapped from Norton to Triumph and carried on their winning ways.Despite his habit of concentrating on getting the job done properly with little regard for conventional budgeting (“You’ve spent this year’s budget in the last month,” he was told by an alarmed secretary. “Then you didn’t make a very good estimate of what I was going to spend, did you?,” he replied), Hele produced winners on a relative shoestring. At the 1969 Belgian Grand Prix, on the majestic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Ardennes, Triumph’s entry for the 500cc race was the factory tester Percy Tait on a Hele-developed version of the “Daytona” road machine. Tait travelled with the mechanics Arthur Jakeman and Jack Shemans in an ageing Transit van, in which the three also slept. At first they were barred from the factory teams area of the paddock by amazed mechanics from the Italian manufacturer MV-Agusta, who could not believe this was a serious entry from a renowned manufacturer; the muscular and quietly determined Jakeman persuaded them otherwise.

In the race itself, Tait made a lightning start and led the world champion Giacomo Agostini for three glorious laps, finally to finish second to the MV-Agusta at an average speed of 116mph.Nineteen sixty-nine was a great year for Triumph’s production models, the 650cc Bonneville winning the production machine Isle of Man TT race in the hands of the Welshman Malcolm Uphill, with the first ever 100mph lap by a production bike. In 1970 Uphill was on the new 750cc three-cylinder Trident and repeated the victory, despite the machine losing power and slowing. That problem was diagnosed and quickly cured back at the factory, where Hele’s devoted team were working on proper racing versions of the Trident, using frames designed and built by Rob North in his modest Nuneaton workshop. The resultant machines were almost unbeatable in the formative years of the Formula 750 that captured the imagination of riders enjoying the new, more powerful, machines then emerging. To listen to one of Hele’s three-cylinder Tridents, its engine revving to 8,000 rpm, howling through a totally unsilenced megaphoned exhaust, was to experience one of the most memorable sounds in the history of motorcycle racing. They won all over Europe, they won in South Africa, they won in America and Derby’s John Cooper beat Giacomo Agostini in Mallory Park’s 1971 Race of the Year, after a titanic battle that still has star billing in racing legend. But financial troubles were overtaking the BSA-Triumph group and racing inevitably fell victim to cutbacks.Hele moved to the development unit at Kitts Green in Birmingham, most of his team going with him. When the final collapse of the company closed all operations, Hele refused an offer from a Japanese factory and took up an appointment with the outboard motor makers British Seagull in Dorset, travelling home to the Midlands at weekends. His time with the British motorcycle industry ended in his seventies, working as a freelance on the rotary-engined Norton model that was the company’s swansong.

“We offer some of our courses as on-line modules, and update the case studies regularly.”Birmingham Business School, which already offers the subject at postgraduate level, will be introducing a new module into its undergraduate programme. The school’s newly appointed lecturer in e-business, Lorna Chicksand, believes the internet has yet to make an impact on British management practices, compared to the United States. “By focusing on e-business we hope to give students the skills to address these shortfalls in UK business practice.”This does not mean UK-based companies are reluctant to move into the virtual arena. In Aberdeen, Doug Cruickshank says companies within the oil-and-gas sector are keen to incorporate the latest thinking on e-business into their own operations “They know that it can cut costs and lead to innovation. There’s every encouragement for staff to learn how to use the internet to improve business.” In future, he argues, the popular courses will be those run by academics with strong industry links.

“Universities with good corporate contacts understand the way e-business is developing in large as well as small firms Students should look at the credibility of the institution. Does it have a history of working with industry and a series of partnerships with local firms?”Robert Fraser, who works in the offshore oil industry, was the first student on the Robert Gordon course to sit his exams while on a rig. The virtual campus created by the university enabled him to communicate with fellow students and tutors. “After three years offshore I wanted to do something which would enhance my career prospects and make better use of my time here.”At the other end of the UK, Surrey University’s business school is offering people from established firms a taste of what it is like to operate in the world of e-commerce. It has just enrolled its second intake for a part-time MSc in E-Business Management.

The two-year course focuses on the changes taking place in industry as a result of computing and telecommunications, but combines these core modules withsubjects like corporate strategy and financial management.E-business, it seems, hasn’t done away with the need to learn the old tricks of the management trade, but it may be about to revolutionise the way that they are learned.. She was a Mexican baby who became a Texan babe; a Latina teen who did A-levels in a Swiss boarding school; a social worker in India; a shop assistant in El Paso; and an American beauty queen. She’s been shot at on a freeway; imprisoned in the Philippines by a love-crazed restaurateur; was briefly married to Otto von Bismarck’s great-grandson; and she’s a legend among American soap viewers as the sexy lady-cop Paula Stevens in Sunset Beach. In addition, she can lasso steers, milk cows and throw your I Ching Laura Elene Harring is a woman of wide accomplishments. Laura Elene Harring is a woman of wide accomplishments.
What she can do really well is bewitch people. She certainly bewitched David Lynch, famously strange director of surreal and alarming nightmares – Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks. She entranced him enough to be given the co-starring role in Lynch’s new piece of weirdiosity, Mulholland Drive, where she plays both Rita – a mysterious dark-haired woman who loses her memory after a crash and sets out to discover why horrible people are after her – and Camilla, a creamy movie star adored by both sexes.”They told me to wear no make-up, and I just walked in and met him,” she says of her audition.

“He just looked at me, this way and that, and all he said was ‘Good’, ‘Good…’, all the time. The way he casts films, I’m told, is that, if he can see the person in front of him in some of the scenes in the movie he’s planning, then he’s happy.” But what made her so suitable to play the haunted amnesiac Rita? “There was the sadness in my eyes,” said Ms Hanning, gravely “A sad look that was perfect for Rita. And he told a journalist in Cannes that he liked the way he had no idea where I was from. That there was a quality of mystery to me, that the role needed.”Sadness and mystery aren’t the first things that hit you about Ms Harring. You encounter a tornado of positive thinking and full-on femininity. Her massive deep-brown eyes bore straight through to your palpitating heart, even as you mentally note her spookily white skin, her tight white sweater and her eardrum-piercingly high laugh.
